Ecological tyres help to decrease CO2 emissions and cars consumes, with enviromental and portafoglio benefits. Let’s find together green tyres to understand what they are, what advantages they offer and how to recognize eco-friendly tyres.
First of all, this type of tyre is defined in various ways. Just to name a few, we have: green, eco-friendly, ecological, biodegradable. However, everyone indicates tyres made up of mixtures that guarantee lower energy dispersion (at least 20% less) and greater aerodynamics, with consequent savings on fuel consumption.
They are innovative products, designed to respond to the new European regulations EURO 7 (2025/2026).
There are various types depending on the materials used to make them, such as cereals and beets, dandelions and corn. They are made without the intervention of petroleum and derivatives, making disposal with low environmental impact.
Each tyre has a label recognized at European level which certifies the quality of the product according to different categories. In particular, to recognize the most efficient and most ecological tyres, class A must be shown on the label for CO2 emissions, for shorter braking distance and for noise (megaphone symbol with only a black line).
Introduced in 2012, the tyre label provides consumers across Europe with essential information on fuel efficiency, safety and noise, detailing the tyres' rolling resistance, wet grip and external noise.
Furthermore, very often the manufacturers decide to add the diminutive ECO to the name of the tire or to link it to ecological initiatives.
As already mentioned, ecological tires have innumerable advantages in terms of the environment but also in terms of consumption and disposal, while maintaining excellent performance. In fact, it has been shown that an eco-friendly tire can save up to 7.5% in terms of petrol consumed.
These products have effective and measurable economic savings, guaranteeing better performance in terms of resistance, dissipated energy and hardness. In fact, the impact of ecological rubber on the asphalt is softer, making it less noisy, reducing noise pollution. Furthermore, they have the highest level of safety, a longer life and limited wear over time compared to a traditional tyre.
The tyre manufacturers, given the current trend of attention to the environment, have begun to experiment in the field, studying the creation of cutting-edge experimental solutions.
For example, Michelin is working on a tubeless tire for electric cars, to be presented in 2024, that is always connected, safe, ecological and completely immune to punctures.
GoodYear, on the other hand, is testing the 100% creation of car tires with organic and completely recycled materials such as rice and plastic waste, which it expects to present by 2030.
Finally, Pirelli, at the 2021 Monaco Motor Show, presented the first FSC-certified tire in the world, a certification that certifies the origin of the raw materials, ensuring that they have been taken from responsibly and sustainably managed forests.
In addition to ecological tyres, there are retreaded tyres, another valid alternative for reducing fuel consumption and harmful emissions to the environment. The construction of this type of tire consists in replacing the tread of an old rubber with a new material, keeping the structure of the rubber intact for a maximum of 3 times. This makes it possible to cut production costs by at least half, without losing the quality of the tire, given the very high attention and rigidity of the European standards in this regard. This process also makes it possible to greatly reduce the carbon footprint, favoring the circular economy.
The quality and performance of these products are certainly very high but, as with all tyres, if the pressure is not optimal, the yield on the tread will be lower and petrol consumption will increase and therefore also harmful emissions for the environment and expense for the purchase of fuel.

The Type of the car is a code that the producer assigns to each vehicle in order to distinguish it from similar models.
You can find this code in the italian registration certificate in two places: At point D.2, Vehicle type, or at point E, vehicle identification number.
